The Certificate in Lay Ministry Training is composed of 5 theological foundation courses plus 2 skills courses.

The 5 theological foundation courses are as follows:

  • How to Understand the Bible (BB 3100/2100)
  • 3 of 4 biblical surveys:
    • Old Testament Survey I (OT 3103)
    • Old Testament Survey II (OT 3104)
    • New Testament Survey I (NT 3166/2166)
    • New Testament Survey II (NT 3167/2167)
  • Systematic Theology (TH3200)

The two skill courses* should be from the corresponding ministries as follows:
1 applied ministry course** in one of the following areas:

  • Sunday School Teaching (RE 3260 or RE 3264/2264)
  • Deacon Ministry (PM 3351/2351 or GM 0501)
  • Nursing Home Ministry (GM 0554 or PM 0302)
  • Child Care (RE 0267 or RE 0262)
  • Social Work (GM 0501 or GM 2500)
  • Chaplaincy (PM 3351/2351 or PM 0302 or GM 0554)
  • Music (CM 0270 or CM 0271 or CM 0273)
  • Visitation or Pastoral Care (PM 3351/2351 or CE 0232)
  • Evangelism (PM 0255)
  • Church Administration (CA 2281)

* Note that both skill courses must be in the same ministry area.
**Note that where multiple courses are listed for a ministry area, you may choose the one which best fits your situation.

Procedure
If you desire to work toward a Certificate in Lay Ministry Training, then choose the courses with which you want to start (no specified order is required, but it is preferred that the student do the theological foundation courses first). To choose your courses, click on the curriculum button above, click on diploma courses, and choose the area in which the course resides. A course description is provided along with the textbooks and costs. Next click on administration, applications, independent study and fill out the application and identify that you are applying for the Certificate in Lay Ministry Training. Print out the application and send it to us with your course selections and fees. The course will be shipped out via UPS within one working day of receipt of application.

The courses are available through classroom settings in Extension Centers found all over the United States, online study courses, CD courses or independent study.
